Traditional

A traditional Indian attar is a single-note or classical blend distilled the old way, most of it at Kannauj, and carried in oil rather than alcohol. Mitti after rain, mogra, kewda, rose and oud are the ones people know by name. These are 8ml alcohol-free roll-ons, blended in India in small batches, with notes and intended wearer published on each product page. The full guide to what attar is covers the deg and bhapka method and what is honestly in a bottle sold as attar today.

Concentrated attar oil being decanted from a glass vial

Why attar?

An oil outlasts a spray.

An alcohol spray pushes scent outward fast, then fades. An attar is the oil on its own, with no ethanol, so it stays where you put it and unfolds over hours instead of minutes. That is why a small roll-on outlasts a much larger bottle of eau de toilette.
